DIRECT ACCESS SERVICES
FOR MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC
OR FOR BUSINESS OWNERS
All Direct Access Services will be on a fixed fee basis (giving you certainty on costs) and we will always agree to a free consultation to enable us to understand if your case is suitable to be taken on under Direct Access.
John Brown was called to the Bar in 2000. He is a Direct Access/Public Access Barrister and his registered number with the Bar Council is 40983. As John is a Direct Access Barrister this means he can take cases direct from the General Public and from Businesses as well as accepting briefs from Solicitors.
John will always offer you a fixed fee service and you can click HERE to find all the areas of law which he can assist you in.
There are clear benefits to members of the General Public or Businesses in instructing a Barrister directly under Direct Access, namely: you will save money, as you’ll only be paying for one lawyer (i.e. a Barrister as opposed to a firm of Solicitors + a Barrister) and you will be able to deal directly with a specialist Barrister throughout your case.
If your case is likely to go to a Court or Tribunal you are bound to be more comfortable about matters if the person who prepared your case will also be representing you at the hearing - so giving you continuity.
You will be able to discuss the matter directly with me by phone and email. This means that there is increased continuity as your case will be handled by one individual, not by a firm of Solicitors who will have various people meet with you to understand your case and then brief a Barrister just for the court hearings, meaning on most occasions you are unlikely to meet your Barrister till perhaps 30 minutes to 1 hour before the morning of your hearing.
If you have a number of preparatory hearings before a final hearing you may end up meeting 3 or 4 different barristers but will not know who may represent you at the final hearing.
Through Direct Access, John can offer about 80% of the legal services you can obtain from a firm of high street Solicitors (obvious exclusions are Conveyancing and he cannot offer Legal Aid Services - but if you have Legal Aid you can always ask your Solicitor to instruct John).
John can offer his services cheaper than any High Street Solicitors Firm and as he is not currently VAT registered you will save 20% automatically.
If you bring a quote from a firm of Solicitors, John will guarantee to beat the quote by at least 15%.
Direct Access work will require payment in advance for all work undertaken. John can accept card payments from all credit and debit cards except American Express as well as payment by bank transfer.
John is originally from the NE of Scotland and joined the RAF aged 17 and spent 12 years in the RAF and then went to university (being the first one in his family to do so) and he qualified as a Barrister in 2000.
John holds a PhD in International Conflict Resolution and Arbitration. He has experience of working in the Far East having worked as a Lawyer in Bangkok, Thailand for 3 years. He has a number of contacts in the Far East and this means he can also assist clients with family members in custody in the Far East who may face problems when deported back to the UK, or clients seeking to develop business interests in the Far East.
If you need legal aid you will need to contact a firm of Solicitors with a legal aid contract in the area of law. John can recommend firms he has worked with and you can then ask that he be instructed by your solicitors in legally-aided cases.
We are required by law to carry out identification procedures on Direct Access cases and will require some proof of your identity i.e. a driving licence or passport and a recent utility bill which is proof of your name, date of birth and current address.
If you are acting on behalf of a company, you will be required to produce a certified copy of the Certificate of Incorporation along with evidence that you are authorised to act on behalf of that company.
